The Ferry Chooser: Every Way Onto the Island
Sami-Pisaetos in 20-30 minutes, the Lefkada 'slipper' to Frikes, the cheap Astakos mainland run, the airport chain via Kefalonia - and the winter collapse nobody mentions.
No airport, no bridge: Ithaca is earned by water, and the routes sort neatly by where you’re coming from. Here is the whole picture, seasons included - because the seasons are the part that catches people.
From Kefalonia (the main door)
Sami to Pisaetos, 20-30 minutes - two operators (Levante Ferries and Ionion Pelagos), each running around 14 weekly crossings in season, cars and foot passengers alike, with foot tickets in single-digit euros. The crossing is bookable ahead from about $6, which independents should do in August. Pisaetos is a quay, not a town - have your onward plan (taxi, hire car, or a tour pickup) arranged. Poros to Ithaca runs as an alternative at about 50 minutes. From Kefalonia’s airport (EFL), figure 45 minutes across to Sami before the boat - the full chain works in an afternoon.
From Lefkada and the mainland
Nydri to Frikes - about an hour on the open-deck boat locals call the pantofla (the slipper), landing you in the island’s prettiest corner; a summer service extends the run to Fiskardo on Kefalonia. From the mainland, Astakos is the budget classic: roughly 2 hours to Frikes or a slower run to Pisaetos, with tickets from around 10 euro - the backdoor for anyone driving Greece.
The season truth
Summer’s dozen-plus weekly crossings on the main route collapse to a couple per week in the off-season, and the small routes hibernate entirely. The island doesn’t close in winter - but its door nearly does, and day trips stop making sense. Treat May through early October as the practical window; verify the day’s sailings with the operators (their sites are the authority) in shoulder months especially.
Or skip the puzzle
The full-day tour from Kefalonia (4.6/5 across 139 bookings) bundles the crossing with the island loop - for a first visit without a car, it beats self-assembly on both money and nerves. The math flips for stays: sleeping on Ithaca means the ferry, and now you know which one.
